Description of Ibrâhîm Alahi Wa Salam and his Family:

Some of the People of the Book stated that his name was Ibrâhîm (Abraham) Alahi Wa Salam Ibn Târiq, Ibn Nahur, Ibn Sarough, Ibn Raghu, Ibn Phaligh, Ibn Aher, Ibn Shalih, Ibn Arfghshand, Ibn Sam, Ibn Noah.

They said that when Târiq was seventy five years old, he had Ibrâhîm Alahi Wa Salam, Nahor (Nohour) and Haran. Haran had a son named Lût Alahi Wa Salam. They also said that Ibrâhîm Alahi Wa Salam was the middle child and that Haran died in the lifetime of his father in the land where he was born, the land of the Al-Kaldanieen (Chaldeans), also known as Babylonia. At that time some people worshipped idols of stone and wood; others worshipped the planets, stars, sun and moon; still others worshipped their kings and rulers.

Ibrâhîm Alahi Wa Salam was born into that atmosphere, into a typical family of that ancient time. The head of the family was not even an ordinary idolater, but was one who totally rejected Allâh Subhanahu Wa Ta’ala and who used to make the idols with his own hands. Some traditions claimed that Ibrâhîm's Alahi Wa Salam father died before his birth and he was raised by an uncle whom Ibrâhîm Alahi Wa Salam called father. Other traditions said that his father was alive and was named Azer.

Into that family Ibrâhîm Alahi Wa Salam was born, destined to stand against his own family, against the entire system of his community. In brief, he stood against all kinds of polytheism.

Ibrâhîm's Alahi Wa Salam Childhood:

He was endowed with spiritual understanding from an early age. Allâh Subhanahu Wa Ta’ala enlightened his heart and mind gave him wisdom from childhood. Allâh Subhanahu Wa Ta'ala stated:

Sûrah Al-Anbiyâ (The Prophets) XXL, Ayât 51:

وَلَقَدْ آتَيْنَا إِبْرَاهِيمَ رُشْدَهُ مِنْ قَبْلُ وَكُنَّا بِهِ عَالِمِينَ

And indeed We bestowed a foretime on Ibrâhîm Alahi Wa Salam (Abraham) his (portion of) guidance and We were Well-Acquainted with him (as to his belief in the Oneness of Allâh Subhanahu Wa Ta'ala). (TMQ* 21:51)

During his early childhood Ibrâhîm Alahi Wa Salam realized that his father made strange statues. One day, he asked him about what it was he made. His father replied that he made statues of gods. Ibrâhîm Alahi Wa Salam was astonished and he spontaneously rejected the idea. Being a child he played with such statues sitting on their backs as people sit on the backs of donkeys and mules.

One day his father saw him riding the statue of Mardukh and he became furious. He ordered his son not to play with it again.

Ibrâhîm Alahi Wa Salam asked: "What is this statue, father? It has big ears, bigger than ours."

His father answered: "It is Mardukh, the god of gods, son! These big ears show his deep knowledge."

This made Ibrâhîm Alahi Wa Salam laugh, he was only seven years old at that time.

Ibrâhîm's Alahi Wa Salam Hatred for Idols:

Years passed and Ibrâhîm Alahi Wa Salam grew. Since his childhood his heart had been full of hatred for these idols. He could not understand how a sane person could make a statue and then worship what he had made. He noticed that these idols did nothing at all, they could not even turn themselves right side up if someone turned them upside down. How, then could people believe that such statues could harm or benefit them?

Ibrâhîm's Alahi Wa Salam people had a big temple full of idols, in the middle of which was a niche accommodating the biggest gods which were of different kinds, qualities and shapes. Ibrâhîm Alahi Wa Salam, who used to go to the temple with his father when he was a child, greatly despised all that wood and stone. What surprised him was the way his people behaved when they entered the temple; they bowed and started to cry, begging and imploring their gods for help as if the idols could hear or understand these requests!

At first, such a sight seemed funny to Ibrâhîm Alahi Wa Salam, but later he began to feel angry. Was it not astonishing that all those people could be deceived? What added to the problem was that his father wanted him to be a priest when he was grown. He wanted nothing more from his son that that he revere those statues, yet Ibrâhîm Alahi Wa Salam never stopped displaying his hatred and disdain of them.

Ibrâhîm Alahi Wa Salam Discovers Allâh Subhanahu Wa Ta’ala:

One night Ibrâhîm Alahi Wa Salam left his house to go to a mountain. He walked alone in the dark until he chose a cave in the mountain where he sat resting his back against its wall. He looked at the sky. He had hardly seen it when he remembered that he was looking at planets and stars which were worshipped by some people on earth. His young heart was filled with tremendous pain. He considered what was beyond the moon, the stars and the planets (i.e. Allâh Subhanahu Wa Ta’ala) and was astonished that these celestial bodies were worshipped by men when they had been created to worship and obey their Creator, appearing and disappearing at His command.

Ibrâhîm Alahi Wa Salam Reasons with Celestial Worshippers:

Ibrâhîm Alahi Wa Salam, addressed his people who worshipped celestial bodies as Allâh Subhanahu Wa Ta’ala revealed:

Sûrah Al-An'âm (The Cattle) VI , Ayât 75 till 83:

وَكَذَلِكَ نُرِي إِبْرَاهِيمَ مَلَكُوتَ السَّمَاوَاتِ وَالأرْضِ وَلِيَكُونَ مِنَ الْمُوقِنِينَ

Thus did we showed Ibrâhîm Alahi Wa Salam (Abraham) the kingdom of the heaven and the earth that he be one of those who have Faith with  certainty.  (TMQ* 6:76)

فَلَمَّا جَنَّ عَلَيْهِ اللَّيْلُ رَأَى كَوْكَبًا قَالَ هَذَا رَبِّي فَلَمَّا أَفَلَ قَالَ لا أُحِبُّ الآفِلِينَ

When the night covered him over with darkness he saw a star. He said: "This is my lord." But when it set, he said: "I like not those that set."  (TMQ* 6:77)

فَلَمَّا رَأَى الْقَمَرَ بَازِغًا قَالَ هَذَا رَبِّي فَلَمَّا أَفَلَ قَالَ لَئِنْ لَمْ يَهْدِنِي رَبِّي لأكُونَنَّ مِنَ الْقَوْمِ الضَّالِّينَ

When he saw the moon rising up, he said: "This is my lord." But when it set, he said "Unless my Lord guides me, I shall surely, be among the people who went astray." (TMQ* 6:78)

فَلَمَّا رَأَى الشَّمْسَ بَازِغَةً قَالَ هَذَا رَبِّي هَذَا أَكْبَرُ فَلَمَّا أَفَلَتْ قَالَ يَا قَوْمِ إِنِّي بَرِيءٌ مِمَّا تُشْرِكُونَ

When he saw the sun rising up,  he said: "O my people! I am indeed free from all that you join as partners (in worship with Allâh Subhanahu Wa Ta’ala).   (TMQ* 6:79)

إِنِّي وَجَّهْتُ وَجْهِيَ لِلَّذِي فَطَرَ السَّمَاوَاتِ وَالأرْضَ حَنِيفًا وَمَا أَنَا مِنَ الْمُشْرِكِينَ

Verily, I have turned my face towards Him Who has created the heavens and the earth Hanîfa (Islâmic Monotheism, i.e. worshipping none but Allâh Subhanahu Wa Ta’ala Alone), and I am not of Al-Mushrikûn." (TMQ* 6:79)

وَحَاجَّهُ قَوْمُهُ قَالَ أَتُحَاجُّونِّي فِي اللَّهِ وَقَدْ هَدَانِي وَلا أَخَافُ مَا تُشْرِكُونَ بِهِ إِلا أَنْ يَشَاءَ رَبِّي شَيْئًا وَسِعَ رَبِّي كُلَّ شَيْءٍ عِلْمًا أَفَلا تَتَذَكَّرُونَ

His people disputed with him. He said: "Do you dispute with me concerning Allâh Subhanahu Wa Ta’ala while He has guided me, and I fear not those whom you associates with Him (Allâh Subhanahu Wa Ta’ala) in worship. (Noting can happen to me) except when my Lord (Allâh Subhanahu Wa Ta’ala) wills something. My Lord comprehends in His Knowledge all things. Will you not then remember? (TMQ* 6:80)

وَكَيْفَ أَخَافُ مَا أَشْرَكْتُمْ وَلا تَخَافُونَ أَنَّكُمْ أَشْرَكْتُمْ بِاللَّهِ مَا لَمْ يُنَزِّلْ بِهِ عَلَيْكُمْ سُلْطَانًا فَأَيُّ الْفَرِيقَيْنِ أَحَقُّ بِالأمْنِ إِنْ كُنْتُمْ تَعْلَمُونَ

"And how should I fear those whom you associate in worship with Allâh Subhanahu Wa Ta’ala ( though they can neither benefit not harm), while you fear not that you have joined in worship with Allâh Subhanahu Wa Ta’ala things for which He has not sent down to you any authority. (So) which of the two parties has more right to be in the security? If you but know.' (TMQ* 6:81)

الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا وَلَمْ يَلْبِسُوا إِيمَانَهُمْ بِظُلْمٍ أُولَئِكَ لَهُمُ الأمْنُ وَهُمْ مُهْتَدُونَ

It is those who believe (in the Oneness of Allâh Subhanahu Wa Ta’ala and worship none but Him Alone) and confuse not their Belief with Zulm (wrong i.e. by worshipping others besides Allâh Subhanahu Wa Ta’ala), for them (only) there is security and they are the guided. (TMQ* 6:82)

وَتِلْكَ حُجَّتُنَا آتَيْنَاهَا إِبْرَاهِيمَ عَلَى قَوْمِهِ نَرْفَعُ دَرَجَاتٍ مَنْ نَشَاءُ إِنَّ رَبَّكَ حَكِيمٌ عَلِيمٌ

And that was Our Proof which We gave Ibrâhîm Alahi Wa Salam (Abraham) against his people. We raise whom We will in degrees. Certainly your Lord is All-Wise, All-Knowing. (TMQ* 6:83)

In that debate, Ibrâhîm Alahi Wa Salam clarified to his people that these celestial bodies do not serve as deities and cannot be worshipped as partners with Allâh Subhanahu Wa Ta’ala. Indeed these bodies are created things, fashioned, controlled, managed and made to serve. They appear sometimes and disappear at others, going out of sight from our world. However, Allâh Subhanahu Wa Ta’ala does not lose sight of anything, and nothing can be hidden from Him. He is without end, everlasting without disappearance. There is no other deity but Allâh Subhanahu Wa Ta’ala.

Ibrâhîm Alahi Wa Salam made clear to them, first that the celestial bodies are unworthy of worship and second that they are among the signs of Allâh Subhanahu Wa Ta’ala.

Allâh Subhanahu Wa Ta’ala commanded:

Sûrah Fussilat (They are explained in detail) XLI , Ayât 37:

قُلْنَا يَا نَارُ كُونِي بَرْدًا وَسَلامًا عَلَى إِبْرَاهِيمَ

And from among His Signs are the night and the day, and the sun and the moon. Prostrate yourselves not to the sun nor to the moon, but prostrate yourselves to Allâh Subhanahu Wa Ta’ala Who created them, if you (really) worship Him. (TMQ* 41:37)

Ibrâhîm's Alahi Wa Salam reasoning helped to reveal the truth, and then the conflict between him and his people began for the worshippers of the stars and planets did not stand mute. They began arguing and threatening Ibrâhîm Alahi Wa Salam.

Ibrâhîm Alahi Wa Salam replied:

Sûrah Al-An'âm (The Cattle) VI , Ayât 80 till 82:

وَحَاجَّهُ قَوْمُهُ قَالَ أَتُحَاجُّونِّي فِي اللَّهِ وَقَدْ هَدَانِي وَلا أَخَافُ مَا تُشْرِكُونَ بِهِ إِلا أَنْ يَشَاءَ رَبِّي شَيْئًا وَسِعَ رَبِّي كُلَّ شَيْءٍ عِلْمًا أَفَلا تَتَذَكَّرُونَ

His people disputed with him. He said: "Do you dispute with me concerning Allâh Subhanahu Wa Ta’ala while He has guided me, and I fear not those whom you associates with Him (Allâh Subhanahu Wa Ta’ala) in worship. Ibrâhîm Alahi Wa Salam Reasons with Idolaters:

The curtains are drawn on the first category of the people, those who were worshipping celestial bodies. the next situation reveals the second group, those who were practicing idolatry. Allâh Subhanahu Wa Ta’ala gave Ibrâhîm Alahi Wa Salam  the reasoning he needed the first time and every time he argued with his people. Allâh Subhanahu Wa Ta’ala declared:

Sûrah Al-An'âm (The Cattle) VI , Ayât 83:

 

وَتِلْكَ حُجَّتُنَا آتَيْنَاهَا إِبْرَاهِيمَ عَلَى قَوْمِهِ نَرْفَعُ دَرَجَاتٍ مَنْ نَشَاءُ إِنَّ رَبَّكَ حَكِيمٌ عَلِيمٌ

And that was Our Proof which We gave Ibrâhîm Alahi Wa Salam (Abraham) against his people. We raise whom We will in degrees. Certainly your Lord is All-Wise, All-Knowing. (TMQ* 6: 83)

Ibrâhîm Alahi Wa Salam did his best to make his people heedful to the belief in the oneness of Allâh Subhanahu Wa Ta’ala and to the worship of Him alone. He bade them to firmly renounce the worship of idols. He said to his father and his people:

Sûrah Al-Anbiyâ (The Prophets) XXL, Ayât 52 till 56:

إِذْ قَالَ لأبِيهِ وَقَوْمِهِ مَا هَذِهِ التَّمَاثِيلُ الَّتِي أَنْتُمْ لَهَا عَاكِفُونَ

When he said to his father and his people: "What are these images, to which you are devoted?" (TMQ* 21:52)

قَالُوا وَجَدْنَا آبَاءَنَا لَهَا عَابِدِينَ

they said: "We found our fathers worshipping them.' (TMQ* 21:53)

قَالَ لَقَدْ كُنْتُمْ أَنْتُمْ وَآبَاؤُكُمْ فِي ضَلالٍ مُبِينٍ

He said: "Indeed you and your fathers have been in manifest error." (TMQ* 21:54)

قَالُوا أَجِئْتَنَا بِالْحَقِّ أَمْ أَنْتَ مِنَ اللاعِبِينَ

They said: "Have you brought us the truth or are you one of those who play about?" (TMQ* 21:55)

قَالَ بَل رَبُّكُمْ رَبُّ السَّمَاوَاتِ وَالأرْضِ الَّذِي فَطَرَهُنَّ وَأَنَا عَلَى ذَلِكُمْ مِنَ الشَّاهِدِينَ

He said: Nay, your Lord is the Lord of the heavens and the earth, Who created them and to that I am one of the witness. (TMQ* 21:56)

Ibrâhîm Alahi Wa Salam reasons with his Father:

All was finished between Ibrâhîm Alahi Wa Salam and his people and the struggle began. the most amazed and furious was his father (or his uncle who had raised him), for as it is well known, he not only worshipped idols but sculpted and sold them as well. Ibrâhîm Alahi Wa Salam felt that it was his duty as a good son to advise his father against this evil so that he could be saved from Allâh's Subhanahu Wa Ta’ala punishment.

Being a wise son he did not make his father feel foolish, nor did he openly laugh at his conduct. He told him that he loved him, thereby hoping to generate fatherly love. Then he gently asked him why he worshipped lifeless idols who could not hear, see or protect him. before his father could become angry he hastily added:

Sûrah Maryam (Mary) XIX , Ayât  43 till 48:

يَا أَبَتِ إِنِّي قَدْ جَاءَنِي مِنَ الْعِلْمِ مَا لَمْ يَأْتِكَ فَاتَّبِعْنِي أَهْدِكَ صِرَاطًا سَوِيًّا

"O my father! Verily there has come to me of the knowledge that which came not into you. So follow me, I will guide you to the Straight Path. (TMQ* 19: 43)  

يَا أَبَتِ لا تَعْبُدِ الشَّيْطَانَ إِنَّ الشَّيْطَانَ كَانَ لِلرَّحْمَنِ عَصِيًّا

"O my father! Worship not Shaitân (Satan) has been a rebel against the Most Gracious (Allâh Subhanahu Wa Ta’ala). (TMQ* 19: 44)

يَا أَبَتِ إِنِّي أَخَافُ أَنْ يَمَسَّكَ عَذَابٌ مِنَ الرَّحْمَنِ فَتَكُونَ لِلشَّيْطَانِ وَلِيًّا

"O my father! Verily, I fear lest a torment from the Most Gracious (Allâh Subhanahu Wa Ta’ala) should overtake you, so that you become a companion of Shaitân (Satan) (in the Hellfire) (TMQ* 19: 45)

قَالَ أَرَاغِبٌ أَنْتَ عَنْ آلِهَتِي يَا إِبْرَاهِيمُ لَئِنْ لَمْ تَنْتَهِ لأرْجُمَنَّكَ وَاهْجُرْنِي مَلِيًّا

He (the father) said: "Do you reject my gods, O Ibrâhîm Alahi Wa Salam (Abraham)? If you stop not (this), I will indeed stone you. So get away from me safely (before I punish you)." (TMQ* 19: 46)

قَالَ سَلامٌ عَلَيْكَ سَأَسْتَغْفِرُ لَكَ رَبِّي إِنَّهُ كَانَ بِي حَفِيًّا

Ibrâhîm Alahi Wa Salam (Abraham) said: "Peace be on you! I will ask forgiveness of my Lord for you. Verily, He is unto me Ever Most Gracious. (TMQ* 19: 47)  

وَأَعْتَزِلُكُمْ وَمَا تَدْعُونَ مِنْ دُونِ اللَّهِ وَأَدْعُو رَبِّي عَسَى أَلا أَكُونَ بِدُعَاءِ رَبِّي شَقِيًّا

"And I shall turn away from you and from those whom you invoke besides Allâh Subhanahu Wa Ta’ala. And I shall can upon my Lord and my Lord and I hope that I shall not be unblest in my invocation to my Lord." (TMQ* 19: 48)

Ibrâhîm Alahi Wa Salam debates with the Idolaters:

His father's harsh treatment did not stop Ibrâhîm Alahi Wa Salam from delivering the message of truth. Angry and sad to see people prostate before idols, he was determined to stamp out these practices and went to the town to debate with the people knowing full well that he might suffer harm.

Like a wise doctor searching for the cause of a sickness so as to prescribe the proper cure, or like a judge who questioned the accused sharply so that he mighty detect the truth. Ibrâhîm Alahi Wa Salam asked them: "Do the idols see you when you prostrate before them? Do they benefit you in any way." They quickly tried to defend their beliefs. They argued that they knew the idols were lifeless but that their forefathers had worshipped them; to them this was proof enough for their belief.

Ibrâhîm Alahi Wa Salam explained that their forefathers had been wrong. This angered them and they retorted: "Are you condemning our gods and our forefathers? Or are you just joking?"

Ibrâhîm Alahi Wa Salam showed no fear as he replied: "I am serious. I come to you with a true religion. I have been sent with guidance from our Lord Who alone is worthy of worship, Who is the Creator of the heavens and the earth, and Who regulates all affairs of life, unlike the dumb idols which are just stone and wood."

To convince them that the idols could not harm him, he challenged: "I have already condemned them; of they had any power they would have harmed me by now!"

Ibrâhîm Alahi Wa Salam reasons with the Idolaters, Second Time:

Allâh Subhanahu Wa Ta’ala recounted:

Sûrah Ash-Shu'arâ (The Poets) XXVI , Ayât 69 till 82:

وَاتْلُ عَلَيْهِمْ نَبَأَ إِبْرَاهِيمَ

And recite to them the story of Ibrâhîm Alahi Wa Salam (Abraham) (TMQ* 26: 69)

إِذْ قَالَ لأبِيهِ وَقَوْمِهِ مَا تَعْبُدُونَ

When he said to his father and his people: "What do you Worship?"  (TMQ* 26: 70)

قَالُوا نَعْبُدُ أَصْنَامًا فَنَظَلُّ لَهَا عَاكِفِينَ

They said: "We worship the idols, and to them we are ever devoted." (TMQ* 26: 71)

قَالَ هَلْ يَسْمَعُونَكُمْ إِذْ تَدْعُونَ

He said: "Do they hear you, when you call on (them)? (TMQ* 26: 72)

أَوْ يَنْفَعُونَكُمْ أَوْ يَضُرُّونَ

"Or do they benefit you or do they harm (you)?" (TMQ* 26: 73)

قَالُوا بَلْ وَجَدْنَا آبَاءَنَا كَذَلِكَ يَفْعَلُونَ

They said: "(Nay) but we found our fathers doing so." (TMQ* 26: 74)

قَالَ أَفَرَأَيْتُمْ مَا كُنْتُمْ تَعْبُدُونَ

He said: "Do you observe that which you have been worshipping - (TMQ* 26: 75)

أَنْتُمْ وَآبَاؤُكُمُ الأقْدَمُونَ

"You and your ancient fathers? (TMQ* 26: 76)

فَإِنَّهُمْ عَدُوٌّ لِي إِلا رَبَّ الْعَالَمِينَ

"Verily, they are enemies to me, save the Lord of the 'Âlamîn (mankind, jinn and all that exist), (TMQ* 26: 77)

الَّذِي خَلَقَنِي فَهُوَ يَهْدِينِ

"Who has created me, and it is He Who guides me.  (TMQ* 26: 78)

وَالَّذِي هُوَ يُطْعِمُنِي وَيَسْقِينِ

"And it is He Who feeds me and gives me to drink.  (TMQ* 26: 79)

وَإِذَا مَرِضْتُ فَهُوَ يَشْفِينِ

"And when i am ill, it is He Who cures me.  (TMQ* 26: 80)

وَالَّذِي يُمِيتُنِي ثُمَّ يُحْيِينِ

 "And Who will cause me to die, and then will bring me to life (again).  (TMQ* 26: 81)

وَالَّذِي أَطْمَعُ أَنْ يَغْفِرَ لِي خَطِيئَتِي يَوْمَ الدِّينِ

"And Who I hope, will forgive me my faults on the Day of Recompense, (the Day of Resurrection)." (TMQ* 26: 82)

In another Sûrah Allâh Subhanahu Wa Ta’ala revealed:

Sûrah Al-Hajj (The Pilgrimage) XXII , Ayât 16 till 23:

وَكَذَلِكَ أَنْزَلْنَاهُ آيَاتٍ بَيِّنَاتٍ وَأَنَّ اللَّهَ يَهْدِي مَنْ يُرِيدُ

Thus have We sent it (this Qur'ân Al Kareem) down (to Muhammad Sallallahu ‘Alaihi Wa Sallam) as clear signs, evidences and proofs, and surely, Allâh Subhanahu Wa Ta’ala guides whom He wills. (TMQ* 22: 16)

إِنَّ الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا وَالَّذِينَ هَادُوا وَالصَّابِئِينَ وَالنَّصَارَى وَالْمَجُوسَ وَالَّذِينَ أَشْرَكُوا إِنَّ اللَّهَ يَفْصِلُ بَيْنَهُمْ يَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِ إِنَّ اللَّهَ عَلَى كُلِّ شَيْءٍ شَهِيدٌ

Verily, those who believe (in Allâh Subhanahu Wa Ta’ala and in His messenger Muhammad Sallallahu ‘Alaihi Wa Sallam), and those who are Jews, and the Sabians, and the Christians, and the Majûs, and those who worship others besides Allâh Subhanahu Wa Ta’ala, truly Allâh Subhanahu Wa Ta’ala will judge between them on the Day of Resurrection. Verily, Allâh Subhanahu Wa Ta’ala  is over all things a Witness. (TMQ* 22: 17)

أَلَمْ تَرَ أَنَّ اللَّهَ يَسْجُدُ لَهُ مَنْ فِي السَّمَاوَاتِ وَمَنْ فِي الأرْضِ وَالشَّمْسُ وَالْقَمَرُ وَالنُّجُومُ وَالْجِبَالُ وَالشَّجَرُ وَالدَّوَابُّ وَكَثِيرٌ مِنَ النَّاسِ وَكَثِيرٌ حَقَّ عَلَيْهِ الْعَذَابُ وَمَنْ يُهِنِ اللَّهُ فَمَا لَهُ مِنْ مُكْرِمٍ إِنَّ اللَّهَ يَفْعَلُ مَا يَشَاءُ

See you not that whoever is in the heavens and whoever is on earth, and the sun, and the moon, and the stars, and the mountains, and the trees, and Ad-Dawâbb [moving (living) creatures, beasts], and many of mankind prostrate themselves to Allâh Subhanahu Wa Ta’ala. But there are many (men) on whom the punishment is justified. And whoever Allâh Subhanahu Wa Ta’ala disgraces, none can honour him. Verily Allâh Subhanahu Wa Ta’ala does what He wills. (TMQ* 22: 18)

هَذَانِ خَصْمَانِ اخْتَصَمُوا فِي رَبِّهِمْ فَالَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا قُطِّعَتْ لَهُمْ ثِيَابٌ مِنْ نَارٍ يُصَبُّ مِنْ فَوْقِ رُءُوسِهِمُ الْحَمِيمُ

These two opponents (believers and disbelievers) dispute with each other about their Lord: then as for those who disbelieved, garments of fire will be cut out for them , boiling water will be poured down over their heads. (TMQ* 22: 19)

يُصْهَرُ بِهِ مَا فِي بُطُونِهِمْ وَالْجُلُودُ

With it will melt (or vanish away) what is within their bellies, as well as (their) skins. (TMQ* 22: 20)

وَلَهُمْ مَقَامِعُ مِنْ حَدِيدٍ

And for them are hooked rods of iron (to punish them). (TMQ* 22: 21)

كُلَّمَا أَرَادُوا أَنْ يَخْرُجُوا مِنْهَا مِنْ غَمٍّ أُعِيدُوا فِيهَا وَذُوقُوا عَذَابَ الْحَرِيقِ

Every time they seek to get away there from, from anguish, they will be driven back therein. and (it will be) said to them: "Taste the Torment of burning!" (TMQ* 22: 22)

إِنَّ اللَّهَ يُدْخِلُ الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا وَعَمِلُوا الصَّالِحَاتِ جَنَّاتٍ تَجْرِي مِنْ تَحْتِهَا الأنْهَارُ يُحَلَّوْنَ فِيهَا مِنْ أَسَاوِرَ مِنْ ذَهَبٍ وَلُؤْلُؤًا وَلِبَاسُهُمْ فِيهَا حَرِيرٌ

Truly, Allâh Subhanahu Wa Ta’ala will admit those who believe (in the Oneness of Allâh Subhanahu Wa Ta’ala - Islâmic Monotheism) and do righteous good deeds, to Gardens underneath which rivers flow (in Paradise), wherein they will be adorned with bracelets of gold and pearls and their garments therein will be of silk. (TMQ* 22: 23)

The Idolaters Questions Ibrâhîm Alahi Wa Salam:

When the people returned, they were shocked to see their gods smashed to pieces, lying scattered all over the temple. They began to guess who had done that to their idols and Ibrâhîm's Alahi Wa Salam name came to their minds.

Allâh Subhanahu Wa Ta’ala said:

Sûrah Al-Anbiyâ (The Prophets) XXI , Ayât 59 till 67:

 

قَالُوا مَنْ فَعَلَ هَذَا بِآلِهَتِنَا إِنَّهُ لَمِنَ الظَّالِمِينَ

They said: "Who has done this to our âlihah (gods)? He must indeed be one of the Zâlimûn (wrongdoers)." (TMQ* 21:59)

قَالُوا سَمِعْنَا فَتًى يَذْكُرُهُمْ يُقَالُ لَهُ إِبْرَاهِيمُ

They said: "We heard a young man talking against them, who is called Ibrâhîm Alahi Wa Salam (Abraham)." (TMQ* 21:60)

قَالُوا فَأْتُوا بِهِ عَلَى أَعْيُنِ النَّاسِ لَعَلَّهُمْ يَشْهَدُونَ

They said: "Then bring him before the eyes of the people, that they many testify." (TMQ* 21:61)

قَالُوا أَأَنْتَ فَعَلْتَ هَذَا بِآلِهَتِنَا يَا إِبْرَاهِيمُ

They said: "Are you the one who has done this to our gods, O Ibrâhîm Alahi Wa Salam (Abraham)?" (TMQ* 21:62)

قَالَ بَلْ فَعَلَهُ كَبِيرُهُمْ هَذَا فَاسْأَلُوهُمْ إِنْ كَانُوا يَنْطِقُونَ

[Ibrâhîm Alahi Wa Salam (Abraham)] said: "Nay, this one, the biggest of them (idols) did it. Ask them, if they can speak!" (TMQ* 21:63)

فَرَجَعُوا إِلَى أَنْفُسِهِمْ فَقَالُوا إِنَّكُمْ أَنْتُمُ الظَّالِمُونَ

So they turned to themselves and said: "Verily, you are the Zâlimûn (polytheists and wrongdoers)." (TMQ* 21:64)

ثُمَّ نُكِسُوا عَلَى رُءُوسِهِمْ لَقَدْ عَلِمْتَ مَا هَؤُلاءِ يَنْطِقُونَ

Then they turned to themselves (their first thought and said): "Indeed you [Ibrâhîm Alahi Wa Salam (Abraham) know well that these (Idols)  speak not!' (TMQ* 21:65)

قَالَ أَفَتَعْبُدُونَ مِنْ دُونِ اللَّهِ مَا لا يَنْفَعُكُمْ شَيْئًا وَلا يَضُرُّكُمْ

{Ibrâhîm Alahi Wa Salam (Abraham)} said: "Do you then worship besides Allâh Subhanahu Wa Ta’ala, things that can neither profit you, nor harm you?" (TMQ* 21:66)

أُفٍّ لَكُمْ وَلِمَا تَعْبُدُونَ مِنْ دُونِ اللَّهِ أَفَلا تَعْقِلُونَ

"Fie upon you, and upon you that which you worship besides Allâh Subhanahu Wa Ta’ala! have you then no sense?" (TMQ* 21:67)

Furious, they demanded that Ibrâhîm Alahi Wa Salam be arrested and tried. Ibrâhîm Alahi Wa Salam did not resist. This was precisely what he had been aiming for, so that he could show them up in public for their foolish beliefs.

At the trial they asked him if he was responsible for breaking the idols. Smiling, he told them to ask the biggest idol which was still whole. He told them that he must be the culprit! They replied that he knew well that the idol could not speak or move which gave Ibrâhîm Alahi Wa Salam the chance to prove the foolishness of worshipping these lifeless objects.

They then realized the senselessness of their beliefs; however, their arrogance would not allow them to admit their foolishness. All they could do was to use their power of authority as tyrants usually do to punish Ibrâhîm Alahi Wa Salam. They kept him in chains and planned their revenge.

The Idolaters Try to burn Ibrâhîm Alahi Wa Salam:

Anger was burning in their hearts. They decided to throw Ibrâhîm Alahi Wa Salam into the biggest fire they could build. All the citizens were ordered to gather wood as a service to their gods. Ignorant, sick women vowed that if they were cured they would donate so much wood to burn Ibrâhîm Alahi Wa Salam. For several days they collected fuel.

They dug a deep pit, filled it with firewood and ignited it. They brought a catapult with which to cast Ibrâhîm Alahi Wa Salam into the fire. Ibrâhîm Alahi Wa Salam was put on the catapult, his hands and feet were tied. The fire was ready with its flame reaching the sky. The people stood away from the pit because of the great heat. Then the chief priest gave his order to cast Ibrâhîm Alahi Wa Salam into the fire.

The angel Jibrîl came near Ibrâhîm's Alahi Wa Salam head and asked him: "O Ibrâhîm Alahi Wa Salam do you wish for anything?" Ibrâhîm Alahi Wa Salam replied: "Nothing from you."

The catapult was shot and Ibrâhîm Alahi Wa Salam was cast into the fire. But his descent into the blaze was as descent on steps in a cool garden. The flames were still there, but they did not burn for Allâh Subhanahu Wa Ta’ala had issued His command:

Sûrah Al-Anbiyâ (The Prophets) XXI , Ayât 69:

قُلْنَا يَا نَارُ كُونِي بَرْدًا وَسَلامًا عَلَى إِبْرَاهِيمَ

We (Allâh Subhanahu Wa Ta’ala) said: "O fire! be you coolness and safety for Ibrâhîm Alahi Wa Salam (Abraham)!"  (TMQ* 21:69)

The fire submitted to the will of Allâh Subhanahu Wa Ta’ala, becoming cool and safe for Ibrâhîm Alahi Wa Salam. It only burned his bonds, and he sat in the midst of the fire as if he were sitting in a garden. He glorified and praised Allâh Subhanahu Wa Ta’ala, with a heart that contained only his love for Allâh Subhanahu Wa Ta’ala. There was not any vacant space therein for fear, awe, or worry. It was filled with love only.

Fear and awe were dead, and the fire was turned into coolness, making the air pleasant. Those who love Allâh Subhanahu Wa Ta’ala as Ibrâhîm Alahi Wa Salam do did not fear.

The Faith of the Believers:

Allâh Subhanahu Wa Ta’ala declared:

Sûrah Âl-'Imrân (The Family of Imrân) III , Ayât 173 till 175:

الَّذِينَ قَالَ لَهُمُ النَّاسُ إِنَّ النَّاسَ قَدْ جَمَعُوا لَكُمْ فَاخْشَوْهُمْ فَزَادَهُمْ إِيمَانًا وَقَالُوا حَسْبُنَا اللَّهُ وَنِعْمَ الْوَكِيلُ

Those (i.e. believers) unto whom the people (hypocrites) said, Verily, the people (pagans) have gathered against you ( a great army), therefore fear them." But it (only) increased them in Faith, and they said: "Allâh Subhanahu Wa Ta’ala (Alone) is Sufficient for us, and He is the Best Disposer of affairs (for us). (TMQ* 3: 173)

فَانْقَلَبُوا بِنِعْمَةٍ مِنَ اللَّهِ وَفَضْلٍ لَمْ يَمْسَسْهُمْ سُوءٌ وَاتَّبَعُوا رِضْوَانَ اللَّهِ وَاللَّهُ ذُو فَضْلٍ عَظِيمٍ

so they returned with Grace and Bounty from Allâh Subhanahu Wa Ta’ala. No harm touched them; and they followed the good Pleasure of Allâh Subhanahu Wa Ta’ala. And Allâh Subhanahu Wa Ta’ala  is the Owner of Great Bounty. (TMQ* 3: 174)

إِنَّمَا ذَلِكُمُ الشَّيْطَانُ يُخَوِّفُ أَوْلِيَاءَهُ فَلا تَخَافُوهُمْ وَخَافُونِ إِنْ كُنْتُمْ مُؤْمِنِينَ

 It is only Shaitân (Satan) that suggests you the fear of his Auliyâ [Supporters and friends (polytheists, disbelievers in the Oneness of Allâh Subhanahu Wa Ta’ala and in his Messenger, Muhammad Sallallahu ‘Alaihi Wa Sallam)]; so fear them not, but fear Me, if you are (true) believers. (TMQ* 3: 175)

The throng, the chiefs, and the priests sad watching the fire from a distance. It was burning their faces and nearly suffocating them. It kept burning for such a long time that the disbelievers thought it would never be extinguished. When it did burn out, they were greatly amazed to find Ibrâhîm Alahi Wa Salam coming out of the pit untouched by the fire. Their faces were black from the smoke, but his was bright with the light and grace of Allâh Subhanahu Wa Ta’ala. The raging fire had become cool for Ibrâhîm Alahi Wa Salam and had only charred the ropes which held him. He walked out of the fire as if he were walking out of a garden. Cries of astonishment were heard from the heathens.

Sûrah Al-Anbiyâ (The Prophets) XXI , Ayât 70:

وَأَرَادُوا بِهِ كَيْدًا فَجَعَلْنَاهُمُ الأخْسَرِينَ

And they wanted to harm him, but We made them the worst losers. (TMQ* 21:70)

This miracle shamed the tyrants, but it did not cool the flame of anger in their hearts. However after his event many of the people followed Ibrâhîm Alahi Wa Salam, although some kept their belief a secret for fear of harm or death at the hands of the rulers.

Ibrâhîm Alahi Wa Salam challenges those who proclaim themselves as gods, King Namrud:

Ibrâhîm Alahi Wa Salam had established a definite reasoning against idolaters. Nothing was left for him except to reason against the people who proclaimed themselves gods.

When the king, Namrud, heard of Ibrâhîm's Alahi Wa Salam safe exit from the fire he became very angry. He feared that the status of godhead he had proclaimed for himself was not challenged by an ordinary human being. He summoned Ibrâhîm Alahi Wa Salam to the palace and held a dialogue with him which Allâh Subhanahu Wa Ta’ala recounted:

Sûrah Al-Baqarah (The Cow) II, Ayât 258:

أَلَمْ تَرَ إِلَى الَّذِي حَاجَّ إِبْرَاهِيمَ فِي رَبِّهِ أَنْ آتَاهُ اللَّهُ الْمُلْكَ إِذْ قَالَ إِبْرَاهِيمُ رَبِّيَ الَّذِي يُحْيِي وَيُمِيتُ قَالَ أَنَا أُحْيِي وَأُمِيتُ قَالَ إِبْرَاهِيمُ فَإِنَّ اللَّهَ يَأْتِي بِالشَّمْسِ مِنَ الْمَشْرِقِ فَأْتِ بِهَا مِنَ الْمَغْرِبِ فَبُهِتَ الَّذِي كَفَرَ وَاللَّهُ لا يَهْدِي الْقَوْمَ الظَّالِمِينَ
